I am here in Berlin for TechEd 2009. A big thank you to everyone who attended my session yesterday on security awareness. Yesterday was also memorable in that I took part in the Berlin Wall 20th anniversary. It felt very special to part of it.
If you are free tomorrow why not join me at my latest security session. SIA 318 Cybercrime: Defence against the Dark Arts. 3.45pm Paris 1, Hall 7-1c. Slides are available on the com-net and the session will be available on Tech-Online after the show. Hope you can make it
Well this weekend I have been hard at work developing a new Social Network Security course for the US Military. With short deadlines I had to cancel a family trip in order to get the work done. I am still here in Belgium and unfortunately due to a heavy workload I have not seen much of it.
Now I realised I forgot to post my security blooper pictures this week so here you go. As you may or may not know I was recently on a family holiday in Paris. During our visit we went to see the famous Mona Lisa painting at the Louvre. On entering the building our bags were checked for, I don’t know what, a can of coke perhaps!! And not once did we have to go through any kind of scanner or search process. I will tell you it’s a good job I left my Kalashnikov at home :0)
Seriously though, if you are going to implement security at least do it right or not at all. Tomorrow it’s back to normality as I am teaching another Windows 7 MasterClass followed by Windows Server 2008 R2 on Tuesday. Then it’s home…at least for a few days.
Firstly a big thank you to everyone from the Danish Defence who attended our Windows Server 2008 R2 session. As always you guys were great! I love visiting military bases you see some amazing things. This however is my favourite. In the base you are escorted everywhere (naturally). At reception they take your ID in exchange for a visitor smart tag (badge). So far so good I hear you say.
The building is locked down by cameras and a swipe card entry system. At this point I am thinking that hey these guys are on the ball..Until!!! A visit to the bathroom reveals a wonderful Xerox Networked printer and Fax. Wonderful :0)
Having had phenomenal success this year with our security & technology events we are in the process of putting together 2 events called CyberCon 2010 & Dive Deeper Tech Forum 2010. These events will be sold to host countries throughout
EMEA and the US during 2010.
During 2009 we visited The UK, Ireland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Cyprus. For 2010 we are looking at Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Cyprus, and hopefully Las Vegas or Orlando.
We are looking for MCT’s / MVPs / Microsoft FTEs who are interested in getting involved. Although for Tech Forum not have the budget to pay speakers we will cover all travel and hotel expenses and you will get recognition in the market via our EMEA marketing-campaign. Due to the specialised nature of the CyberCon 2010 events we will pay a stipend plus travel & hotel expenses.
During 2008 & 9 We delivered content to around 10,000 delegates throughout EMEA and had some awesome speakers. For 2010 we endeavour to deliver deep technical content to even more delegates throughout multiple countries.
For Tech Forum 2010 tracks include:
Windows Server Infrastructure & Management: Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 –
AD – Virtualization – Powershell – System Centre
Communications: Microsoft Exchange server 2010 , Office 2010
Security: General
Collaboration: Office SharePoint Server 2010
In terms of depth 300 & 400 level sessions are required.
In terms of the CyberCon events Topics areas of interest are:
Hacking Methodologies – Tools etc
Network Security
Identity & Management
Strategic Defence Techniques
Incident Response
Cybercrime Forensics
These can cover a range of Operating systems (not just windows)
If you have speaking experience, are interested and would like to submit a session idea then please send an email to info@quality-training.co.uk we look forward to hearing from you.
If you are concerned about security (like most people) then you will be delighted with Microsoft Security Essentials or MSE. I have been beta testing Microsoft’s free anti virus product and I must tell you I am VERY impressed.
This combined with Microsoft’s free anti spyware software and IE8 is showing great promise. Did I also mention it was free! So what are you waiting for, download it today.
Well today I am back in the office preparing for my upcoming 3 sessions at TechEd Europe 09 in Berlin. This time around I am delivering a session called Defence Against the Dark Arts which look at defence measures individuals and businesses can implement in order to protect assets. From malicious software to the inside man, this 75min session is packed with suggestions, stories and demos to help you form a formidable defence. I also take a look inside the murky world of forensics and demo tools like Helix and En-Case. I will even show you how to clone a phone for under a $1.
My other security session is an interactive session called Security Assessment Planning and Implementation. We all know how important it is to be security compliant and aware but what good practice methods do you implement? Have you encountered an bad practice? This 75min session is an ideal opportunity to ask questions and discuss ideas. My final session is on Windows 7. I have been working with the new OS for around 8 months now and I am blown away by it’s speed and performance. So much so that I decided to deliver a session focussed on Power Management. Here we unravel the mysteries and jargon to reveal what really lies at the heart of Windows 7. Is it muscle or flab? For more information on TechEd Europe 09 check out the MS website at http://www.msteched.com
Finally at last week’s Cybercrime Security Forum in Oslo my good friend Bill demoed a great piece of security assessment software. Topala! This is an awesome tool which can perform in-depth security assessments both on a local and remote machine. Check it out today! http://www.gtopala.com/
I just want to say a big thank you to all the delegates who attended our Cybercrime event in Oslo. We have had great feedback. Last night myself and Bill went for dinner in the city. Whilst out we were on the lookout for security bloopers. After a while we came across this gem. At National Theatre station a “secure” gate system and right next to it you could just walk in, like “what’s the point!” I love it…
Today I am in Oslo, Norway for the next leg in our Cybercrime security Forum 09 event. Thanks so much to everyone in Stockholm for a great event. Yesterday I was so tired I conked out on the flight. I have just completed my first session of the day and the level of enthusiasm is great. I was also just informed of a huge bank robbery in Sweden yesterday. I would just like to say It wasn’t us :0) Anyway onward and upwards. Tool of the day Network Miner. This is cool :0) http://sourceforge.net/projects/networkminer/
Well that’s it for day one of the Cybercrime security Forum event in Stockholm. What a great day. Over 70 delegates and loads of questions, great! Thanks to everyone from Global Knowledge and Cornerstone for sponsoring the event. Great hospitality. We had four great sessions today which kicked off with my “The Enemy Within” which looked at threats which can come from within your company. After that William had a great session of security methodologies.
This afternoon I started with another new session, Covert information Gathering which went down very well. William’s final session covered hacking tools and websites which included many great (and scary) tools.
This evening I was delighted to deliver a Cybercrime session to the Swedish .NET Developer User Group. Tomorrow it’s all about defence…I’ll keep you updated…
It’s amazing the gadgets and toy’s you can pick up in the security world. Join Andy Malone in a quick review of the latest must haves. From covert video recorders, key loggers, lock picks and more. You can even clone a cell phone for 60p….Cor!!
